Day 1,   11:30 - 1pm

'Maximising Serendipity: The art of recognising and fostering
unexpected potential - A Systemic Approach to Change'

led by James Lawley

It’s clear why researchers, scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs would be interested in serendipity, but why would psychotherapists? When we think of serendipity, the sensational examples catch the eye: vulcanisation, velcro and viagra for instance. Yet there are many more smaller but no less significant instances of serendipity at the personal level. Although the ‘ah-ha’ moments get all the press, they are only a small part of the serendipity process that Penny Tompkins and I mapped into six stages. We regularly see our clients go through a similar process and supporting them to maximise serendipity is one the most important parts of our work.
Pre-reading available here.

James Lawley, co-author of Metaphors in Mind: Transformation through Symbolic Modelling, is fascinated by the application of self-organising systems theory, modelling, metaphor and David Grove’s clean philosophy to individual, group and organisational evolution. The shift required is so radical it sometimes hurts his brain yet it gives him hope that undreamed of possibilities are just waiting to be discovered.  www.cleanlanguage.co.uk

Day 1,   2pm - 3.30pm

'Clean and Crafty Supervision'

led by Tommy Hanchen and Michael Mallows

This workshop will explore ideas in areas such as supervising; coaching; 'theraping' and challenging. Three or four volunteers (agreed in advance) will provide some anonymised details of an ongoing, 'live' client case (rather than role play).
Each case will be presented to the delegates, four of whom will ask an opening question for a supervision session, and state the hypothesis behind the question.
The supervisee will then select a supervisor for the session. The facilitators (Tom and Michael) will 'freeze frame' to ask questions, make comments etc.
Delegates will have an opportunity to practice:
the P. R. O. model (Problem, Remedy, Outcome)
    asking Clean questions
    honing their questioning skills
    reducing waffle

Tommy Hanchen is a UKCP registered psychotherapist who provides training, consultancy and supervision to therapists and social care workers.

Michael Mallows

is a certified Clean Facilitator, an author, public speaker, life and business coach, management consultant, trainer, and an adoption and fostering expert. He supervises a number of people in the Clean community, and likes to blend different models and theories of human behaviour. He also runs personal development workshops and works in the private, voluntary and public sectors. www.craftylistening.co.uk/

Day 2
,   9:00 - 9:45am

'The Divided Brain and
its Relevance for NLP Therapy'
  led by Sue Bayliss

Iain McGilchrist, in his ground breaking book, The Master and His Emissary, shows us how each brain hemisphere has a different 'take' on the world. He charts the history of the West in terms of its bias towards either a left or right hemispheric view of the world and points up the problems that ensue from an overemphasis on the left hemispheric orientation today. The dominance of CBT and form filling is evidence of the left hemispheric approach to therapy currently in vogue.

This has relevance for the practice of NLP Therapy, think parts integration for starters, but much else besides, and also the climate in which we like to help heal people through the use of metaphor, imagination and poetic / trance language which is threatened by a left hemispheric bias.

Sue has been fortunate to work closely with Iain in terms of seeing his patients and discussing her work with them as well as having presented twice with him at the London NLP conference. Sue has sought to apply his ideas in her therapeutic practice and also educate clients about the hemispheric split and its relevance to their problems. Sue will outline Iain's concept in brief and show how many of the NLP techniques we use help to balance the two hemispheres or shift people from being stuck in a left hemispheric view to experience life more fully and somatically with greater access to a right hemisphere orientation. Sue hopes to fit in a couple of brief case studies and a short exercise.

Sue Bayliss, Principal Consultant and registered NLP Trainer, enjoys an excellent reputation within Norfolk and Suffolk as an effective coach, an inspirational trainer and a highly knowledgable consultant. She has been developing people and organisations for over twenty-five years.

Day 2,   10:00 - 1pm

Keynote Presentation

'Confidentiality, Therapy and the Law'

A participative workshop led by Peter Jenkins

This is a popular and highly participative workshop. The session is designed to clarify the key aspects of confidentiality that relate to, for example, data protection law, the psychotherapist's duty to warn others, disclosure of records and enforced access to notes by third parties such as solicitors, police and the courts. The workshop is based on short scenarios, discussion and brief outlines of the law in non-technical language, with maximum opportunities for dialogue and follow-up questions.

What will I get from attending this workshop?

  • Increased clarity about the relationship of psychotherapy to the law
  • Greater understanding of the ethical and legal issues involved in breaking or maintaining client confidentiality
  • More confidence in grasping key legal concepts
  • The opportunity to discuss issues and ask questions relating to this crucial topic

Peter Jenkins is an experienced counsellor trainer, and author of several books on the law, including  'Counselling, Psychotherapy and the Law' (Second edition, Sage, 2007). He has extensive experience of running training workshops on legal aspects of therapy. He is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling at the University of Manchester and an honorary counsellor at Manchester University Counselling Service. Formerly a member of the BACP Professional Conduct Committee, he is currently a member of the UKCP Ethics Committee.
